Our Custom Pre-K Worldschooling Curriculum | Unit 1

Hola! Ciao! Bonjour! We have been officially Worldschooling our 4 year old since her first birthday! In the last 3 years, I have written several curriculum updates and modifications/additions based on what excites her, helps her to become more like the well-rounded adult our world needs, and the basics of what she needs to know in parrallel to the traditional box school curriculums.

This year we are aiming to spend more time in nature, together, and most importantly with limited screen-time. In the past, we haven't allowed her to watch tv/youtube/etc. that was not pre-screened by her father and I. Her Youtube Kids account is limited to pre-approved content. She has a list of shows that are approved for her to watch on TV/streaming apps. She basically is approved to watch almost anything on PBS Kids. We update this list to include things that she likes and right now her Three approved shows that are rewards if she earns them are Bluey, Puppy Dog Pals, and Paw Patrol.

However, with her starting her Pre-K curriculum, we aim to limit her desire to watch tv by making it feel like a chore. We have not started implementing this portion yet, so subscribe to our blog to see updates on the progress. So far, here is the checklist that must be completed before she can watch tv.

  1. Did she do her cleaning assignments/chores? We are not asking her to do big chores. We are teaching her how to carry her own weight. Cleaning up the table for herself after she eats, sweeping her messes, cleaning her toys, and now that she has her own room - making sure that her things are not in my husband and I's room. We have two new sayings, "Don't put it down, put it up" to encourage her to naturally put things back where they belong and finding a home for it if it is new. The other saying is "Table, Chair, Floor". This one is to indicate which order to clean her messes. If you are subscribed to our blog, you will be able to witness all the new sayings we will be using and comment useful tips.

  2. Did she do work for 45 minutes (at minimum)? Our school sessions are 3 hours, engaging, and intense. This is all we can allot at this moment based on her attention span and my never-ending to do lists. It makes it easier to prioritize what she needs to be mentally stimulated before I dive into my work. She has school in some sense of it every day of the week. Tuesdays, she is with her dad while I work and he works the overnight shift causing him to be exhausted by the time she is up and ready for her morning time routine, On these days, she has access to my iPad and can use her apps. The apps are ABC Mouse, Lucas and Friends, Hooked on Phonics, Hooked on Math, Hooked on Spelling, and a drawing app. Before she can watch Youtube Kids or play her games, she has to complete 45 minutes of the academic apps. We also use the Leapfrog video game system.

  3. Did she exercise and play music? We try to be outside as much as possible since we had our yard redone and have been working on our garden. Her father and I play with her often so that we can stay in shape and she sees us living a physically active and healthy lifestyle. On Tuesdays and rainy days we use Youtube to watch videos for DannyGo, Cosmic Kids Yoga, and other kids fitness focused channels. She is learning the Ukelele and how to simg from Youtube videos as well. We watch a variety of musical channels and for singing we LOVEEEEEE Cheryl Porter Vocal Coach's channel. I am the only non-musically gifted person in my family, but I noticed her love for singing and decided we have to nurture it so we added it to her curriculum.

  4. Did she read and work on a foreign language? She has a growing vocabulary bank, but prefers not to read on her own. We get books from our local library and have a growing home library. However, my favorite part is the implementation of her YOTO Mini with hundres of stories and songs that keep her entertained without a screen! This post is not sponsored, but the way I promote this device should be!

  5. Did she hydrate? This part seems simple, but I want her to always remember to drink water. I worked at an amusement park and have seen many kids get dehydrated and have to go to the emergency office on site.
