Honoring My Grandfather’s Legacy: Why I Work Like I’m Running Out of Time.

People always ask me why I work so hard/do so much. I have to work like I don’t have enough time to complete my life’s mission. Let me tell you where that feeling comes from.

Today, February 15, 2025 makes two years since I’ve gotten that phone call. I vividly remember people tellin
g me to stay strong. My response was, “Why?” I know we hate seeing people grieving because we can’t do anything to help, but telling someone to be strong isn’t the right way. Especially now, with so many people desensitized to the fact that people die. Being sad and grieving is equally important as experiencing joy and happiness. But it’s uncomfortable. I haven’t been the same since he passed and I’m okay with that.
I was blessed with two grandfathers who were ministers that helped countless souls accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
This Black History Month, I am honoring a local Legend to the original Atlanta area, not this gentrified version. The grandfather I’m talking about now, Dr. R. L. White was more than what could be googled about him. Some people only have grandfathers who were “loving husbands, fathers, and grandfathers”. Mine actually spent his life trying to make the world a better place for people of all racial make ups to feel safe. Yes, my grandfather was the kind of person to literally be friends with the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

For almost two decades, my grandad served as the president of the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP. Supporting movements like the gun buyback initiative to try to decrease the number of useless deaths happening in the Black communities specially surrounding the Atlanta area. He’s had to host too many funerals for young people who should still be alive. Many of which, their families were underprepared for. Meaning they had no life insurance policies in place over their Black sons and daughters.
My grandfather was more than a celebrity Tv preacher with a radio show. He was an Intergenerational Global Community Liaison. He used his platform to encourage as many people as possible to seek knowledge. Not just Biblical knowledge, but to just keep learning and growing.
Today, I admit to aiming to continue working for our community. Being multilingual, I aim to connect specifically the Black, Deaf, LGBT, and Spanish speaking communities. Continuing in his footsteps, here are the ways I actively build on his work:
Being a licensed life insurance agent to help our people realize how much they are worth while living to encourage them to make better decisions about their health and hobbies. If you knew your life was worth thousands or even millions, would you still be doing stupid stuff like eating junk food or putting yourself in situations where someone has a gun pointed at you? Stop being selfish. If you died yesterday, what would your family be doing today? Would the be messaging everyone and posting on the book for people to donate to your gofundme? Get some damn life insurance so your family can grieve peacefully and start the process of creating generational wealth.

Being a P.I.M.P.—Personal Improvement and Motivation Partner (not what you think!) I am the kind of accountability partner who encourages you to find out what your purpose is and work towards it like you won’t have enough time to complete it!
Being an advocate for Black families to learn Spanish and for all hearing people to learn American Sign Language or their country’s respective signed language so Deaf people have more adequate access to effective communication in the national and global communities.
Being a professional networker. I love supporting people who are brave enough to become business owners. Being an entrepreneur is difficult and not as glamorous as social media makes it seem when you’re first starting off, but the feeling of waking up and loving the work you do and getting paid to do what you’re created to do is an underrated feeling. So if you needed a sign, start your business, NOW! As a professional networker, I work with other business owners to bring them clients by sharing their information on my platforms and whenever possible.
Being a talk radio personality. I use my platform to have multilingual intergenerational conversations. Check out who’s been on so far by searching “WCEG Network Enesse” on YouTube or one of the 12 podcasting platforms where our content is available.
Being a homeschooler. This allows me to do something my grandparents didn’t really have the option to do. Be in charge of my children’s education. Instead of sending them to a school that is governed by people who openly hate them in the textbooks and underprepare them for the real world, I get the honor of curating their curriculum to teach them how to be well rounded people.
Being a loan signing agent and notary allows me to meet people who are in the biggest transitions of their lives (I.e. divorce, getting a passport, buying a property, etc.) and speak life into them. Speaking life into them isn’t a part of the job, but it’s in my blood.
All in all, I am grateful for the life my grandfathers lived. With Dr. R. L White being the founder of Mt. Ephraim Baptist church, I’ve had the privilege of meeting thousands of people who reached out after his death to tell me the different ways he helped them turn their lives around.
P.S. one of the best things about my grandfather was his sermons, books, and songs were recorded so he lives on through his content. Don’t be afraid to be a content creator, it might be all your family has after your time is up on this planet.
His words live on, and so will mine. Let yours, too.
